Transfer Admission Requirements Fall 2025
Transfer Admission Guidelines
All applications receive a comprehensive review. Admission decisions are based on GPA, intended major, rigor and breadth of curriculum, appropriateness of previous work for continued study at UW-Stout, and other predictors of success. Most transfer students admitted in recent years have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Grade trends by semester are taken into consideration as part of the review. If there are extenuating circumstances for any grades, please be sure to note this in your applicant essay/statement.
Note: For program admissions see "Minimum GPA Requirements for Admission Consideration for Specific Majors"
Minimum GPA Requirements for Admission Consideration to Specific Majors
All transfer students will be admitted as a Pre-Bachelor of Fine Arts (Pre-BFA) student. Upon acceptance information will be provided on how to submit a portfolio and essay to be reviewed by a committee of School of Art & Design Faculty, who will determine direct admissions into the BFA major of your choice. You must be admitted first to receive the information.
There is a $10 application fee assessed at the time you electronically submit your portfolio.
If you are not approved for direct admission into your BFA program of choice after a review of your portfolio/essay or if you choose not to submit a portfolio/essay at the time, you may apply for a change of major in subsequent semesters depending upon available openings in the program. BFA Foundations courses will be available to Pre-BFA students pending seat availability.
